Explanation

With the arrival of the U.N and military personnel, including the U.S. army, throughout the period of the Korean War, all kinds of military supplies poured into Korea through the Busan port. In addition to this war material, a large amount of foreign items were illegally imported and stored in this market, then finally transported to other similar markets across the country. The name Kangtong literally means cans, referring to the fact that most military rations were in canned packages.
Thanks to the economic development since the 1970's, illegally imported foreign goods are no longer visible on the market shelves. However, the market has not lost its thriving activity.
