It is possible that the name Bupyeong-dong originated from the same root of the name Bumin-dong. The entire area near the Bosu-cheon estuary was covered with a field of reeds and green grass. Due to this landscape the area has long been called Saetti for grass field, or Choryang in Chinese. The present Choryang was called the new Choryang, naturally compelling the original Choryang to be referred to as the old Choryang. These names were used until the Busan port opened.
It is well known that Bu from Bupyeong-dong in Chinese stands for Bu of Busan in the same character. The Chinese character Pyeong has an identical meaning of 「Tti」 of Saetti as the indigenous vernacular word for 「a field」. Until the liberation, the Bupyeong-dong had been called Bupyeong-jeong, which was then altered to Bupyeong-dong. This was done by replacing -jeong with -dong since -jeong is the same as the Japanese machi. |
