Historical background of the names of-dongs

A main peak facing a gorge at the bottom of Mt. Yeongseon extends to two separated ridge peaks protruding into the sea surface. These ridge peaks, facing the main summit of Yongdu Mountain, are in a topographic configuration of a blue dragon soaring up to the mountaintop. At the bottom of the two peaks are extended rice paddies. This area was formerly called Nonchi, which once had fishing grounds on its left and right sides. Nonchi is the only site with an indigenous name that has remained unchanged, and its area covers a considerable amount to reach the greater part of Jungang-dong, south of the present Jungbu Police Station.

By 1902, a considerably large area reclaimed from the sea by the newly established Busan Reclamation Company was inaugurated as an urban district. This site was called Sae-madang, meaning a new plaza or market. This district was divided into several sections, some of which were then named after Japanese who were involved in obtaining land reclamation permission from the government, such as Jwadeung-jeong and Godo-jeong (-jeong or machi stands for street in Japanese). There are also places that have names related with their function such as Daechang-jeong, meaning the site of a great warehouse, and Gyeongbu-jeong, which translates into the terminal of the Gyeongbu Railway (literally the Seoul-Busan Railway Line).
