Explanation
Following the opening of the Busan port in the wake of the Gwanghwa Treaty on February 27, 1876, all kinds of merchants and traders drifted into the urban area of Busan. They found themselves near the site of the present Yeongju-dong Tunnel, which eventually developed into a new village.
On November 12, 1889, a new road opened from the present Daecheong-no to the lot where the former Mihwadang Department Store stood. With this new road, the village began to transform into urban communities around Mt. Songhyeon (the present Mt. Yongdu).

In April 1908, Choryang Terminal of the Gyongbu Railway Line (Seoul-Busan Line) moved to Busan Terminal, which was established on October 30, 1910. (A fire later burned down the station building in 1953). With the addition of the extended railway up to the First Pier, the city of Busan was transformed into a full-fledged trading port and, true to its name, it became one of the leading trading ports in Asia.

Road construction of the present Jungang-no on the reclaimed level of Mt. Yeongseon lasted almost four years from 1909 before it was completed and officially opened on March 8, 1912. Following the opening of the Jungang-no road, the 26,723-pyong (about 3.3 m2/pyong) building site was reclaimed, covering most of Jungang-dong 4-ga and Daechi-dong 1-ga and 2-ga areas. This site was gradually transformed into a thriving commercial district, building a solid reputation as a good supplier of dried fish and shellfish for the whole province of South Gyeongsang-do, inclusive of Busan.
